Was the hype worth it? Finally trying the famous Sinsa butter-tteok

After having lunch with my friends in Apgujeong, we said goodbye, but I wasn't quite ready to head home yet. Since Sinsa was only a short walk away, I decided to wander over, and before I knew it, I arrived at Saddler Haus.

Saddler Haus

I first heard about this cafe when butter-tteok, or butter rice cake, was becoming a huge trend in Korea after the dubai chewy cookie. I remember one of my closest friends in school excitedly telling me that she had finally managed to get the butter-tteok from Saddler Haus. But what really caught my attention later was hearing that they were opening a hwachae pop-up at the Jamsil Lotte World Mall. Unfortunately, because I had already eaten lunch that day, trying the hwachae wasn't an option. Instead, I decided to try their famous butter-tteok, finally being able to determine if Saddler Haus's butter-tteok really deserved all the hype.

While looking into all the desserts displayed inside the cafe, I learned that butter-tteok actually traces its inspiration to a Chinese dessert known as “huangyou niangao (黄油年糕).” Recently, many Chinese and Hong Kong desserts, such as yangzhi ganlu, or more known as mango pomelo sago, and douhua, or tofu pudding, have become increasingly popular in Korea, and I honestly love that I can try them here without having to travel abroad. Since Korea shares some similar ingredients and culinary traditions with its neighboring countries, it feels interesting to see how desserts travel and evolve between different countries.

To briefly explain about butter-tteok, it's made by baking glutinous rice dough with plenty of butter, creating a fusion-style dessert. Some people even call it “butter bread,” but after trying it myself, I definitely think it's much closer to rice cake, or in Korean, tteok, than bread. Then again, maybe I'm a little biased because I've always preferred rice cakes over bread.

What's unique about Saddler Haus is the offering of several flavors, including original, chocolate, and sweet pumpkin, but I decided to keep it simple and order the original flavor. The other flavors sounded delicious, but I thought they might be a little too sweet for me.

After my first bite, I completely understood why this place was so popular. It was simply… really, really good.

The outside was beautifully crisp, while the inside was incredibly chewy, reminding me of jeolpyeon, a traditional Korean rice cake. That contrast in texture was honestly the best part. Just thinking of this experience makes me want to have another butter-tteok from Saddler Haus. Although the butter rice cake was quite sweet, it never became overwhelming because of the rich, toasty, buttery flavor that balanced everything out. For some reason, every bite made me feel like I was standing inside a bakery while fresh pastries were coming out of the oven.

My favorite part, though, was definitely the crust. It was crispy without being hard, which immediately reminded me of one of my favorite desserts, canelé. If you also love that lightly caramelized, chewy texture, I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy butter rice cake too. Some people might find it a little buttery, but paired with a cup of coffee, I thought it was absolutely perfect. Next time, I think I'll finally give the chocolate flavor a try.

And well, I somehow finished an entire box in like 15 minutes while sitting there. So, on my way home, I ended up buying another box so my parents could try it too. In the end, I was the one who devoured another box of butter-tteok at home though.
