Escaping summer heat in Bukchon

Although I've frequently visited areas near the Gyeongbokgung Palace before, I realized that I had never really explored Bukchon, which is located just north of the palace. Since my best friend and I had been planning to meet up during summer break, we decided to make a day of it.

For lunch, we went to Kkangtong Mandu before slowly making our way to get dessert. The walk from the restaurant to the cafe was much longer than we had expected, mostly because I had gotten us lost. I had wandered off into the hanok village neighborhood looking for neungsohwa, also known as the trumpet creeper flower that blooms in summer and is a bit of a seasonal highlight in these older parts of Seoul, and somewhere along the way, I lost track of where we were. Under the summer heat, we were already exhausted by the time we arrived, making the cool air and peaceful atmosphere inside the cafe feel even more welcoming.
The Wild Raspberry Flower Yakgwa with Traditional Confections came with a flower-shaped yakgwa soaked in wild raspberry syrup, alongside perilla chocolate gangjeong and several other small traditional sweets. What I loved most about this dessert was that it didn't feel like just one single thing on a plate, but felt more like a mini tasting course introducing different kinds of Korean sweets all at once. Everything complemented each other so well, and it made the whole dessert feel even more special. Out of everything on the plate, my favorite was the yakgwa itself as it was sweet, chewy, crunchy, and honestly perfect.
As for the drinks, I had a genuinely difficult time deciding because almost every option on the menu sounded quite unfamiliar to me. All of the drinks on the menu basically had this herbal, botanical quality to them. Each one was built around some kind of tea or plant I had never come across before. I do admit that at first I felt a little hesitant, since I'm not usually someone who goes for strong or heavily aromatic drinks. Yet it was so hot outside that I eventually just went for a drink from the menu.
I chose the I'm Pine Oolong, made by cold-brewing oolong tea overnight before layering it with pineapple and grapefruit aromas. Although this drink sounds like an unusual combination, it was incredibly refreshing while still letting the rich flavor of the tea come through. What I especially loved was the subtle and natural sweetness, which is not the kind of artificial sweetness you get at a lot of cafes these days. Everything here tasted like it came from real, authentic ingredients, and you could definitely tell.
My friend ordered the Lemon Myrtle Matcha Soda, made with homemade lemon syrup, lemon myrtle-infused water, and freshly whisked matcha. I only had a small sip, but the citrus paired with the matcha created a surprisingly refreshing combination that felt just right for a hot summer afternoon.
What impressed me most was how the drink menu managed to embed in distinctly Korean elements, especially these more traditional tea varieties, in a way that felt mostly approachable. Bukchon gets a lot of international visitors, and I think that probably shows in how thoughtfully the menu is designed. They also seemed to offer traditional tea ceremony classes, which honestly made me want to come back and try that someday with my bestie.

Looking back, I think what made this visit memorable was walking through Bukchon with one of my closest friends, escaping the summer heat together, and ending the afternoon in a peaceful hanok surrounded by good conversations and desserts rooted in Korean tradition. I haven't explored Bukchon very much before, but after this visit, I have a feeling I'll be returning a lot more in the future!
