Why I keep writing these down제가 이 기록을 계속 쓰는 이유
I'm Claire. I live in Korea, I'm eighteen, and I go to a lot of cafes.
This started as a way to remember things. A dessert is such a small thing to build a memory around, but somehow the ones I remember most clearly are always attached to a bowl, a glass, a table, a person sitting across from me. The winter my friend and I found a fruit toast on social media. The afternoon it snowed and I walked into a cafe I'd never heard of just to stop being cold. The tea house in Insadong that has quietly followed me from elementary school to now.
So this is a diary more than a review site. I do say what things taste like, because I think about taste a lot. But what I'm actually keeping is the afternoon around it.
A lot of what I write about is Korean — hangwa, tteok, omija, sikhye, bingsu. I like watching familiar ingredients I grew up with show up somewhere new, in a modern dessert or a drink nobody expected. I also like desserts that travelled here from somewhere else and changed on the way. Both feel like the same thing to me: something ordinary getting looked at properly.
I write everything twice, in English and in Korean, because both languages are mine and neither version says exactly the same thing.
Thank you for reading. Go eat something sweet.
