A quiet cafe visit to start spring break

Starting my school spring break, I spent an afternoon in Sinnonhyeon, stopping by a quiet cafe decorated with Korea's traditional roof tiles, giwa.

Hangwa Warak

Because I've always liked “gaeseong juak,” a traditional Korean dessert, I decided to visit this popular place in Seoul for the first time. However, I ended up trying a wider variety of traditional desserts than I expected. They all tasted so good and I'm looking forward to visiting again to try more desserts!

Hangwa Warak is a cafe that reinterprets traditional Korean sweets like “yakgwa” and “gaeseong juak.” The term “Hangwa” refers to traditional Korean desserts often made with ingredients like rice, honey, and grains, carrying a sense of Korean culture and history. After finding a seat for myself on the 2nd floor, I ordered one dessert and a drink.

The apple rice cake dessert was made with “seolgi,” a type of steamed rice cake known for its light and fluffy texture, filled with homemade apple jam. It was topped with apple cream and crumble, creating a balance of flavors that felt savory. The apple “jeonggwa,” which is fruit slowly preserved in syrup and often used in traditional Korean desserts, was shaped like a flower and added an extra layer of sweetness and texture.

Alongside this, I had a mulberry pomegranate iced tea with Darjeeling. Mulberries, in Korean “odi,” are a fruit that has been commonly used in Korean traditional drinks and desserts, known for their subtle sweetness and deep color. The tea was very refreshing with a fruity flavor, which was perfect for the start of spring.

Although it was a short visit to this cafe, it was a meaningful way to start spring break!
