A sweet stop after lunch in Sinsa신사에서 점심 뒤의 달콤한 한 자리

After visiting one of my favorite Taiwanese beef noodle soup restaurants in Sinsa for lunch, I decided to visit Ichi Seoul, a nearby cafe that had been on my list for a while. The map showed that the cafe was only around seven minutes away from the restaurant, making it the perfect way to end the afternoon with dessert!
신사에서 저의 최애 대만 우육면집에서 점심을 먹은 뒤, 오래전부터 가보고 싶었던 근처 카페를 방문하기로 했습니다. 지도를 보니 식당에서 걸어서 7분 정도밖에 걸리지 않아, 오후를 디저트로 마무리하기에 딱 좋은 코스였습니다!

Entering Ichi Seoul right at noon, I realized that I was the first customer of the day. I think I was very lucky because I got the chance to enjoy the peace of the space all to myself. The first thing that caught my attention was the cafe's atmosphere itself. Decorated with traditional Korean elements throughout, mainly giwa roof tiles, the space made every dessert feel deeply connected to Korean culture, despite the menu being more contemporary.
What I loved most was the way the menu introduced Korean ingredients through a more modern version of desserts. I know that ingredients like ssuk, or mugwort, and injeolmi have become increasingly popular in many Korean cafes, but what stood out most was seeing the Korean melon, or chamoe, on the menu as a drink. Although it's a common fruit in Korea that almost everyone grows up eating, especially in summer, I believe that it's rarely found in desserts or drinks, which made this cafe feel like a small discovery for me. Seeing such a familiar fruit presented in a new way made this experience feel even more special, and of course, I could never skip the chamoe latte at Ichi Seoul.
I first began with the ice cream, and I can confidently say that it's truly one of my favorite desserts I've had in a while. I especially enjoyed the nutty crunch of the injeolmi crumbles on top that made every bite satisfying. This dessert was light enough for summer yet layered enough with flavors to give a sense of uniqueness of Korean culture.
Halfway through the ice cream, I tried the chamoe latte which had a light, refreshing sweetness that reminded me why chamoe is such a beloved summer fruit. I think what made this stand out to me was the balance. Despite being a fruit latte, it was delicate without being overly sweet, which is the kind of drink that feels just right on a warm summer afternoon. I also think that anyone could enjoy chamoe latte, regardless of how familiar they are with Korean flavors.
12시에 카페에 도착했는데, 알고 보니 제가 그날의 첫 손님이었습니다. 덕분에 카페의 조용한 공간을 혼자 여유롭게 즐길 수 있어서 정말 운이 좋았다고 생각합니다. 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 카페의 분위기였습니다. 곳곳에 한국의 전통적인 요소들, 특히 기와를 활용한 인테리어 덕분에 현대적인 디저트를 판매하는 공간이면서도 자연스럽게 한국적인 분위기가 느껴졌습니다.
이치서울에서 가장 마음에 들었던 점은 한국적인 재료들을 현대적인 디저트와 음료로 풀어낸다는 것이었습니다. 물론 쑥이나 인절미처럼 요즘 카페에서 자주 볼 수 있는 재료들도 있었지만, 가장 인상 깊었던 것은 참외를 음료로 활용했다는 점이었습니다. 참외는 한국에서는 특히 여름이면 누구나 한 번쯤은 먹어봤을 만큼 익숙한 과일이지만, 디저트나 음료로는 생각보다 자주 접하기 어려운 재료라고 생각합니다. 그래서 이렇게 익숙한 과일을 새로운 방식으로 만날 수 있었다는 점이 더욱 특별하게 느껴졌고, 자연스럽게 참외 라떼를 주문하지 않을 수 없었습니다.
먼저 아이스크림부터 먹어봤는데, 정말 오랜만에 먹어본 디저트 중 가장 마음에 드는 메뉴 중 하나였습니다. 특히 위에 올라간 인절미 크럼블의 고소한 맛과 바삭한 식감이 더해져 먹는 재미가 있었습니다. 여름에 먹기에도 부담스럽지 않을 만큼 가벼우면서도 여러 가지 맛이 층층이 어우러져 한국적인 매력을 잘 담아낸 디저트였습니다.
아이스크림을 반 정도 먹었을 때 참외 라떼도 마셔보았습니다. 은은하고 산뜻한 단맛 덕분에 왜 참외가 여름을 대표하는 과일인지 다시 한번 느낄 수 있었습니다. 무엇보다 가장 좋았던 점은 맛의 균형이었습니다. 과일라떼 임에도 지나치게 달지 않고 부드럽게 어우러져 따뜻한 여름 오후에 정말 잘 어울리는 음료였습니다. 한국의 맛에 익숙하지 않은 사람들도 충분히 맛있게 즐길 수 있을 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.
Walking out of the cafe, I realized that sometimes the most familiar ingredients and flavors that I had grown up with can feel completely new when they're presented from a different perspective. I think this is the reason why nowadays a lot of cafes in Korea are incorporating such traditional ingredients into modern or foreign desserts, giving new, fresh identities. I can't wait to visit more cafes like this! This visit was such a wonderful way to start my summer!
카페를 나오면서 문득 익숙한 재료와 맛도 새로운 방식으로 표현되면 전혀 다른 매력을 가질 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서인지 요즘 한국에는 전통적인 재료들을 현대적인 디저트나 해외에서 유래한 디저트와 접목하는 카페들이 점점 많아지고 있는 것 같습니다. 앞으로도 이런 카페들을 더 많이 찾아가 보고 싶습니다! 이번 방문은 제 여름을 시작하기에 정말 좋은 시간이었습니다!
