A cafe where memories return기억이 돌아오는 찻집

In my 18 years of life, there are some places that became such a big part of my memory after just one visit that I find myself returning every few years. Traditional Dawon at Insadong is one of those places for me.
제가 18년을 살아오면서, 단 한 번의 방문만으로도 오랫동안 기억에 남아 몇 년에 한 번씩 다시 찾게 되는 장소들이 있습니다. 인사동의 전통다원은 저에게 그런 곳 중 하나입니다.

I first visited this cafe, or more specifically a teahouse, when I was in elementary school with my parents while walking around Insadong. I remember visiting Insadong to buy a traditional Korean fan and the once-famous dragon's beard candy before we found this teahouse. To my younger self, this place felt as if I had stepped back into the Joseon Dynasty because everything from the hanok courtyard to the traditional desserts felt worlds away from the cafes I was used to.
The second time I visited was last summer, when one of my friends held an exhibition at Gyeongin Museum of Fine Art, where the teahouse is located between the museum's exhibition halls. After seeing my friend's artwork, stopping here for Korean tea felt like the perfect ending to the day.
And this time, I was back in Insadong again, though not originally for the teahouse. I had gone to look for the popular squishes that have recently become trendy in Korea, and since I was already nearby, I had to visit one of my favorite teahouses once again.
Last time I sat outside, but this visit I finally got to sit indoors on one of the traditional floor cushions, which somehow made the experience feel even more peaceful. I ordered sikhye and yugwa, two of my favorite traditional Korean desserts.
To me, nothing says summer quite like a cold bowl of sikhye. One thing I especially love about Traditional Dawon's version is that it's served with finely crushed ice, keeping the drink cold until the very last sip, which makes the sweetness feel even more refreshing on a hot summer afternoon.
I also ordered yugwa, which had a subtle hint of cinnamon that I hadn't really noticed on previous visits. I'm not sure if everyone would pick up on it the same way, but for me, it kept the sweetness from becoming overwhelming, making the entire bowl of yugwa surprisingly easy to finish.
이곳을 처음 방문한 것은 초등학생 때 부모님과 함께 인사동을 구경하러 갔을 때였습니다. 그날은 전통 부채도 사고, 당시 정말 유명했던 꿀타래도 구매한 뒤, 우연히 이 찻집을 발견했습니다. 어린 저에게 이곳은 마치 조선시대로 시간여행을 온 것 같은 공간이었습니다. 한옥 마당부터 전통 디저트까지, 평소 제가 다니던 카페들과는 너무나도 다른 분위기였기 때문입니다.
두 번째 방문은 작년 여름이었습니다. 친구가 경인미술관에서 전시를 열게 되어 작품을 보러 갔는데, 이 전통다원은 미술관 전시관들 사이에 자리하고 있는 찻집입니다. 친구의 작품을 감상한 뒤 이곳에서 전통차를 마시며 하루를 마무리했던 기억이 아직도 생생합니다.
그리고 이번이 가장 최근의 방문이었습니다. 사실 이번에도 찻집을 가기 위해 인사동에 온 것은 아니었습니다. 요즘 한국에서 유행하는 말랑이를 구경하고 사러 왔다가, 근처까지 온 김에 제가 정말 좋아하는 찻집을 다시 찾게 되었습니다.
지난번에는 야외 자리에 앉았지만, 이번에는 운 좋게 실내 자리가 있어서 전통 방석에 앉아 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다. 덕분에 공간의 차분하고 평화로운 분위기를 더욱 깊이 느낄 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 이날은 제가 가장 좋아하는 한국 전통 디저트인 식혜와 유과를 주문했습니다.
저에게 여름을 가장 잘 떠올리게 하는 음식은 단연 시원한 식혜라고 할 수 있습니다. 특히 전통다원의 식혜는 제가 좋아하는 간얼음이 함께 들어 있어 마지막 한 모금까지 시원하게 즐길 수 있다는 점이 가장 큰 매력이자 장점입니다. 그래서 더운 여름날 마시면 달콤함이 더욱 시원하고 산뜻하게 느껴집니다.
식혜와 함께 주문한 유과도 정말 맛있었습니다. 이전 방문에서는 미처 느끼지 못했는데, 이번에는 은은한 계피 향이 느껴졌습니다. 저만 그렇게 느낀 것일 수도 있지만, 그 향 덕분인지 유과의 단맛이 전혀 부담스럽지 않았고 끝까지 질리지 않고 맛있게 먹을 수 있었습니다.
Looking back, I realized this cafe has quietly followed me through different moments of my life. From childhood, to supporting a friend, and to simply spending an afternoon alone. Maybe that's exactly why every visit feels both familiar and new at the same time. Looking forward to visiting once more before going to university next year!
기억을 돌아보며 생각하면 이 찻집은 제 인생의 여러 순간들을 조용히 함께해 준 공간이었습니다. 어린 시절 부모님과 함께했던 추억, 친구를 응원했던 하루, 그리고 혼자만의 여유로운 오후까지. 그래서인지 이곳은 올 때마다 익숙하면서도 늘 새로운 기분을 느끼게 해주는 것 같습니다. 내년에 대학에 가기 전, 한 번쯤은 꼭 다시 들르고 싶습니다!
